#74 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2023
An intense wine, where it reigns the notes of ripe fruit, balsamic, aromatic herbs, light toasted notes, good volume and a perfect balance transporting all the load of fruit until the end of its journey. Long and persistent. Made with grapes from 50-80 year-old Grenache and Carignan vines. Unbelievable value from a region averaging $50/btl on the shelf. A delicious red with ripe fruit, plum and berry character with hints of citrus fruit undertones. Medium to full body, linear tannins. Drink now or hold. Ideal to pair with savory meats and hearty pasta dishes.
This gorgeous little winery is situated above an old manganese mine, inactive since the Spanish civil war. The gravity-powered winery has rehabilitated some of the mine’s tunnels to store its barrels for optimal ageing. With just 7 hectares of precious old-vines, Clos Berenguer focuses on producing only extrordinary reserve wines worthy of carrying the Priorat appellation on their labels.

A minerally red, with smoke, stone and iron on the nose, transitioning to underscore generous flavors of strawberry preserves, red licorice, violet and a savory boost of cured tobacco. Bright and juicy, but with a core of well-knit, chalky tannins that provide weight and focus. Drink now through 2030. 3,000 cases made, 2,000 cases imported.
