Barolo Chinato is an ancient Piedmontese digestif. The wine used as a production base is Barolo DOCG Albe of the current vintage. The "chinatura" is the addition of infusions of about thirty herbs, rinds and roots of plants, including China (Cinchona Calisaya), hence the name.
Intense ruby red. The nose displays typical freshness of our Barolo, with a weave of roses and ripe cherries, fresh mountain herbs and orange zest. In the mouth, bitter sweet and persistent flavors. Beautiful as a digestive or
paired with dark chocolate. 18% alcohol.

The NV Barolo Chinato from Vajra is a pretty wine with intense aromatics and lovely nuance to match its mid-weight personality. I typically do not review Chinatos because it is a NV wine and specific lot information is hard to identify. This current release from Vajra (Lot 15.190), however, is terrific. The base wine, a 2011 Barolo, gives the Chinato soft contours to match its racy feel.

Made with Barolo wine from the Piedmont region, this vermouth-like apéritif has a dark plum hue, lots of dark fruit and a savory spiciness that suggests dill, eucalyptus and dry cinnamon.
